De La Warr

De La Warr

From Bexhill to The International Style: The De La Warr Pavilion, designed by Serge Chermayeff and Erich Mendelsohn for a prestigious competition in 1934, was a major influence on modernist architecture in the UK. Dubbed “a horizontal skyscraper” by Mendelsohn, the building defines the coastline while breaking new ground in respect of the materials used and the use of space.

Today, the impact of the Continental modernists who escaped  to Britain and  America during the 1930s, is still creating waves. Exhibitions of work by major artists such as Bridget Riley and young hopefuls are held at the De La Warr Pavilion and musicians and comedians perform weekly.

British Art Deco and Modernism have inspired our launch collection ‘Art Deco Contemporary’ – the furniture displays clean, graphic lines that draw the eye to new horizons, while lighting is chrome and nickel plated and set against the primary colours that first decorated these exciting spaces – especially red, yellow, black. Chermayeff and Mendelsohn, we salute you. John and Chrissie Masters September 2015 Decorex Stand F20

Our hand-crafted furniture, lighting and mirrors are made from the finest quality materials. UK workshops have collaborated with us to ensure that both the aesthetic, functionality and the substance of our pieces are of the highest standard.

A wide range of rich veneers, colours, fabrics and finishes are available to create bespoke pieces with individuality and originality.
1930s British Art Deco was influenced by the simplicity of modernism, initiated by the Bauhaus designers – whereas Continental Art Deco had its roots in traditional French furniture. Our collection reflects the purity of British Art Deco, every piece designed to resonate with 21st century taste and form.

‘Art Deco Contemporary’ presents the authority of a worldwide design movement in today’s vernacular, a natural translation, instantly recognised.
